[edit]Etymology
[edit]Possibly from Vulgar Latin *expa(v)orere or Latin expavēre, present active infinitive of expaveō, from Latin pavor. The exact development or derivation is unclear, however: proposals have included a root *exparere or *expavorāre. More likely, it was the result of confusion between or combination with several Latin roots. Compare Aromanian aspar, aspãreari, Megleno-Romanian spar, spăreari, Italian spaurire (“to scare”), spaurare; cf. also Portuguese espavorir, espavorecer, Occitan espavordir.
