Etymology[edit]
Unknown. Perhaps from Vulgar Latin *expavīmen, from Latin expavere, from pavor (“fear”). Or possibly has a connection to spasma, spasmus, from Ancient Greek σπασμός (spasmós, “spasm, convulsion”).
