From Byzantine Greek σταυροπηγία ‎(stauropēgía), from σταυρός ‎(staurós, cross) (Greek σταυρός ‎(stavrós)) + πήγνυμι ‎(pḗgnumi, secure, fix, fasten) (compare the semantics of crucifix).
