From Middle High German stolz, from Old High German stolz, from Proto-Germanic *stultaz (proud, stately, stiff), from Proto-Germanic *stil-, *stal-, *stul- (to be solid, stationary, firm, stiff), from Proto-Indo-European *stel- (to put, stand); cognate with English stout.
