subspecific name (plural subspecific names)

  1. (zoology) The third word in the scientific name of a subspecies, following the name of the species. This applies only to formal names of animals.
In the scientific name of the eastern lowland gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri) the subspecific name is graueri, while the subspecies name is Gorilla beringei graueri. The specific name is beringei and the species name is Gorilla beringei.
