[edit]From a derivation of Proto-Indo-European *bʰelǵ- (“beam, plank”), with the prefix sub- (“under-”) and the concrete-noun suffix -men. Compare Ancient Greek φάλαγξ (phálanx) and Old High German balcho.[1]
