száll

  1. (intransitive) to fly, soar (optionally with locative suffixes)
    Synonyms: repül, szárnyal
    A madár magasan száll.The bird flies high.
  2. (intransitive, of time) to fly, to pass
    Synonyms: telik, repül
    Gyorsan száll az idő.Time flies.
  3. (intransitive) to settle on/onto/at someone or something (used with lative suffixes)
    Synonym: telepedik
    A madár egy faágra szállt.The bird alighted on a tree branch.
  4. (intransitive, of inheritance, legacy) to come into someone’s ownership, to fall on someone, to be transferred to someone by law (used with -ra/-re)
    Synonym: jut
    Az örökség rám száll.The inheritance is transferred to me / I get the inheritance.
  5. (intransitive) to get into, board a vehicle (usually with -ba/-be for cars and -ra/-re for all other vehicles; see Usage notes at felszáll)

Not to be confused with the noun szál (thread) which is pronounced with a short l.
