[edit]From Sabine, cf. also Tībur. If vowel long, can be compared with Θῆβαι (Thêbai) - in fact just this is conjectured by Varro;[1] if short, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *(s)tebʰ- (“post, pole, base”).
