Italian

Etymology 1

Potentially from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Vulgar Latin *trānsfrīcō (to rub across); Klein instead suggests the Italian has ultimate origin in (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Arabic تَفْرِيق (tafrīq, distribution, dispersion), reshaped to match the native prefix tra- (trans-). Cognate with Piedmontese tràfich/tràfic.
