From metathetical alteration of torbón, from Old Galician-Portuguese torvon (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Vulgar Latin *turbōnem (whirlwind), accusative of Latin turbō, turbinem, with altered declension. Compare Portuguese trovão, Spanish turbión (archaic or dialectal turbón). Cf. also turbina.
