Etymology

[edit]

Of uncertain origin. Fraenkel derives the word from an earlier *tros-sk-st, with the root ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ters- (to be dry),[1] while Smoczynski tentatively derives the word from a putative Proto-Indo-European *treh₂ḱ- (to desire), comparing to Ancient Greek τρώγω (trṓgō, to gnaw, eat), which he derives from *treh₂ģ-.[2] However, the existence of Smoczynski's deduced roots is in question.
