tsetse (plural tsetses or tsetse)

  1. Any fly of the genus Glossina, native to Africa, that feeds on human and animal blood; known primarily as a carrier of parasitic trypanosomes.

Usage notes

  • Particularly in North American English, this insect is most commonly referred to as a "tsetse fly." Note: This is also the most common usage in Zimbabwe.
