Etymology

From Vulgar Latin *turta, from Late Latin torta, from Latin torta pānis ("twisted bread"), from the feminine of tortus (twisted). From Latin torta came the expected diphthongized toartă in Romanian. Cognates include Spanish torta, French tourte, Italian torta, Romansch turta, Dalmatian turta, Sicilian turta, Sardinian turta.
