Noun

[edit]

umlaŭto (accusative singular umlaŭton, plural umlaŭtoj, accusative plural umlaŭtojn)

  1. (orthography) umlaut, a diacritic mark ( ¨ ) used in Germanic languages to indicate a back vowel becoming a front vowel.

Usage notes

[edit]

Two dots over a vowel ( ¨ ) indicates a dieresis in some languages, and an umlaut in others. The diacritical mark itself is called surdupunkto.
