From Proto-Baltic *apē-. Cognate with Latvian upe ‎(river), Old Prussian apē ‎(river), Latin aqua ‎(watter), a closer form Romanian apă ‎(watter), Ancient Greek ὑπό ‎(hupó, under), Proto-Baltic *pā- ‎(after) (as in a proverb - "much of water has flown").
