- Any of the upper parts of a bird, including the mantle, back, rump and upper part of the tail coverts
- 1885, Hermann Schlegel, Fredericus Anna Jentink, Notes from the Royal Zoological Museum - Volumes 7-8, page 101:
- Upperparts of back and tail and outerside of legs a reddish brown grey with a silvery tinge, turning towards the nape to a rich red;
