From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wētras, *wētrā, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂weh₁-. Cognate with Proto-Slavic *větrъ (Old Church Slavonic вѣтръ ‎(větrŭ, wind)), Lithuanian vėtra ‎(storm), Latvian vētra ‎(storm).
