Dutch[edit]

Oriolus oriolus in Nederlandsche vogelen, 1770-1829

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From older wiedewaal by assimilation of -d- to -l-, from Middle Dutch wedewale. The first part, wede- probably stems from Proto-West Germanic *widu (wood, forest), whereas -wale could be onomatopoeic.

  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: wie‧le‧waal

Noun[edit]
