Dutch
Etymology
From Middle Dutch wimbrauw, contraction of wintbrauwe, from Old Dutch *wintbrāwa. The first element is unknown but presumed to be related to Ancient Greek ἴονθος (íonthos); the second element is from Proto-Germanic *brēwō. Doublet of wenkbrauw (“eyebrow”). The form wimper is native in some Dutch dialects; its adoption into the standard language (19th c.) probably under influence of German Wimper.
