From late Middle High German wurmstichic, derived from wurmstich m (wormhole), possibly from Middle Low German wormstēke f, m (early 14th century; compare obsolete German Wurmstiche f alongside regular Wurmstich m). Analyzable as Wurm (worm) +‎ Stich (stitch, prick) +‎ -ig
