From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-r(i/u)ŋ (long). Cognate with Burmese ရှည် (hrany), Tibetan རིང་པོ (ring po), Lisu ꓫꓲ (ʃi) and Japhug zri. Compare Lhao Vo qhang, Zaiwa hing, Longchuan Achang səŋ⁵⁵ and Hpon xrái-ŋ.
