From Proto-Iranian *hwanH- (to call), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swanH-, from Proto-Indo-European *swenh₂- (to sound).[1] Compare Persian خواندن (xândan), Latin sonō, Sanskrit स्वनति (svanati).
