Etymology[edit]
Originally a southern dialectal form of anh hùng (“hero”), non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 英雄 (SV: anh hùng). Doublet of anh hùng. Compare yếng (as in yếng sáng) and ánh, and phonetically similar pairs such as hiềng and hành, kiểng and cảnh, kiếng and kính, miểng and mảnh, thiềng and thành.
