Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from German Zander, from a Slavic language, perhaps via Middle Low German sandāt.[1] Pfeifer states that the first German attestation is in East Central German as czandas (in the Marienburger Treßlerbuch[2]) circa 1400, which he derives from a supposed Old Pomeranian *sądač;[3] Low Prussian forms include Zand and other Slavic languages (e.g. Kashubian) have been considered as possible sources.[2] Doublet of sandre.
