Etymology

[edit]

Of unclear origin.[1] Has been compared to Old Armenian շաղախ (šałax, clay, mud, mortar).[2] Other theories relate the word to Old English hwelian (to suppurate);[3] in this case, compare the cognates listed at Latin colostra (colostrum (first milk)).
