Inherited from Byzantine Greek ἀφιόνι(ον) (aphióni(on)), a medieval αντιδάνειο (antidáneio, repatriated loanword), from Ottoman Turkish آفیون (afyon, opium), ultimately a reborrowing from Ancient Greek ὄπιον (ópion).
