Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *mewH-ye-, from *mewH- (“to shut”); cognate with Latin mutus, Sanskrit मूक (muka, “mute”). Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *mews-ye-, from *mews- (“to shut”), and cognate with Palaic [script needed] (muš-, “to satiate oneself”), though this is semantically unconvincing.[1]
Pronunciation
[edit]- (5th BCE Attic) IPA(key): /my̌ː.ɔː/
- (1st CE Egyptian) IPA(key): /ˈmy.o/
- (4th CE Koine) IPA(key): /ˈmy.o/
- (10th CE Byzantine) IPA(key): /ˈmy.o/
- (15th CE Constantinopolitan) IPA(key): /ˈmi.o/
