Ancient Greek[edit]
Etymology[edit]
The word has been compared with Sanskrit पिङ्गल (piṅgala, “reddish brown”) and with πίγγαν (píngan, “nestling, chick”). The etymology remains unknown, however the presence of the prenasalization and the suffix -αλ- could lead to a Pre-Greek etymology.
