[edit]Etymology
[edit]The etymological base of the word is not clear. Formally, there is no reason to disconnect the word from πλάσσω (plássō, “to knead, mold”), but this linkage is not evident on the semantic side. The same holds true for the connection with πλατύς (platús, “flat”). In view of the suffix -ιγγ-, it therefore seems better to assume a Pre-Greek origin.
