σύνορο (sýnoro, “border”) + φύλακας (fýlakas, “guard”). From Byzantine Greek σῠ́νορον (súnoron, “border”) from Koine Greek σῠ́νορος (súnoros, “bordering”), and Ancient Greek φῠ́λᾰξ, φῠ́λᾰκος (phúlax, phúlakos, “guard”).
