From Ancient Greek ῠ̔́στερος (hústeros, later), comparative form of an unattested adjective with superlative ὕστᾰτος (hústatos, last) from Proto-Indo-European *údteros (higher, outer) from *úd (upwards, away) which would make it cognate with English out.
