Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Ačaṙyan leaves the origin open. J̌ahukyan initially derived from Proto-Indo-European *l̥g-yo-, from the zero-grade of *elg- (miserable, poor), whence possibly աղկաղկ (ałkałk). Later he prefers Ałayan's etymology—derivation from Proto-Indo-European *l̥-gy-, from *h₃elh₁- (to destroy). Ałayan calls -ատ (-at) a suffix; compare -ատ (-at) and -ատ- (-at-).
