دَارْفِلْفِل

Etymology[edit]

Univerbation of دَار فِلْفِل (dār filfil), دَار الفِلْفِل (dār al-filfil, house of pepper), originally denoting “the whole house of pepper-like spices”. The similarity to Persian دار (dâr, tree) is coincidental, and in Persian, دارفلفل (dârfelfel) is used less often than the Arabic, because of the existence of other words for this item in Persian, and the sometimes mentioned form دارپلپل (dârpelpel) is rare.
