From the earlier uncontracted form ܓܪܓܪܬܐ (gargartāʾ), from the root ܓ-ܪ (ɡ-r) related to dragging or leaking. Compare Arabic حَنْجَرَة (ḥanjara) and Hebrew גַּרְגֶּרֶת (gargéreṯ).
