[edit]Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac with the latter sense a semantic loan from Ancient Greek κανών (kanṓn). Doublet of ܩܵܢܘܿܢܵܐ (qānōnā, “law”), ܩܲܢܝܵܐ (qanyā, “pen”), and ܩܲܢܝܼܬܵܐ (qanītā, “canal”).
