Etymology[edit]

From the masculine imperative of ܦܵܝܹܫ (pāyēš, remain) +‎ ܫܠܵܡܵܐ (šlāmā, peace), literally remain in peace; compare Arabic مَعَ ٱلسَّلَامَةِ (maʕa s-salāmati).
