Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘏𑘰𑘝𑘹𑘽 (khāteṃ, niche), from Sanskrit क्षत्र (kṣatrá, rule, authority) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-). Cognate with Varhadi खातं (khāta), Ahirani खातं (khāta).
