Inherited from Old Hindi गांव (gāṃva), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀕𑀸𑀫 (gāma), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀕𑀸𑀫 (gāma), from Sanskrit ग्राम (grāma, village), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *grā́mas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *grā́mas, from Proto-Indo-European *(h₂)gróm-os, from the root *h₂ger- (to assemble, gather). Distantly related to Polish gromada (village organization).
