Etymology

    From Proto-Indo-European *(h₂)gróm-o-s, from *h₂ger- (to gather; flock, herd) +‎ *-os (deverbal suffix). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *gromada (heap, pile) (compare Russian грома́да (gromáda, id)).[1]
