Borrowed from Classical Persian شاه (šāh), from Middle Persian 𐭬𐭫𐭪𐭠 (šāh) from Old Persian 𐏋 (xšāyaθiya, king). Compare Punjabi ਸ਼ਾਹ (śāh) / شاہ (śāh), Gujarati શાહ (śāh), Marathi शहा (śahā), Nepali शाह (śāha), Bengali শাহ (śah).
