Borrowed from Classical Persian شاه (šāh), from Middle Persian 𐭬𐭫𐭪𐭠 (mlkʾ /⁠šāh⁠/) from Old Persian 𐏋 ( /⁠xšāyaθiya⁠/, king). Compare Punjabi ਸ਼ਾਹ (śāh) / شاہ (śāh), Gujarati શાહ (śāh), Marathi शहा (śahā), Bengali শাহ (śah).
