Borrowed from Arabic شَيْطَان (šayṭān). Compare Kannada ಸೈತಾನ (saitāna), Hindi शैतान (śaitān), Punjabi ਸ਼ੈਤਾਨ (śaitān) / شیطان (śet̤ān), Bengali শয়তান (śoẏotan), Assamese চৈতান (soitan), Sylheti ꠡꠄꠔꠣꠘ (śoetan).
