Etymology
[edit]A compound of পঞ্চ (ponco, “five”) + গড় (goṛ, “fort, stronghold”), named such due to the presence of five forts in this region, namely: Bhitargarh (ভিতরগড়), Mirgarh (মীরগড়), Rajangarh (রাজনগড়), Hossaingarh (হোসেনগড়), and Debangarh (দেবনগড়).[1]
