Inherited from Old Tamil 𑀇𑀮𑁆 (il), from Proto-Dravidian *il. Cognate with Telugu ఇల్లు (illu, house), Malayalam ഇൽ (il, house, place), Kodava ಇಲ್ಲವೇನ್ (illavēn, man who is a relative), Tulu ಇಲ್ಲ್ (illŭ, house, dwelling, family), Kolami ఎల్ల (ella, house), Gondi ଇଲ୍ଲୁ (illu).
