Etymology
[edit]From Portuguese Castela (“Castile”), an ellipsis of Bolo de Castela (literally “cake of Castile”); Compare Italian pan di Spagna (“sponge cake”, literally “bread of Spain”). Attested from the 16th century. Compare Tagalog Pan de Kastila (“Spanish bread”).
