From Proto-Indo-European *tkei-. Cognates include Sanskrit क्षेति (kṣéti), Avestan 𐬱𐬀𐬉𐬌𐬙𐬌 (šaēiti) and, via Iranian borrowing, Old Armenian շէն (šēn).
