Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *kъsьnъ, of uncertain origin. Possibly from an earlier *kъtsьnъ with meaning spoiled, passed its deadline, related to Bulgarian кисна (kisna, to soak, to ferment). According to Al. T. Balan, from къ (k, towards) +‎ сън (sǎn, dream, sleep).
