From Iranian. Compare Middle Persian bʾc (bāǰ, tribute, tax), from Old Persian 𐎲𐎠𐎪𐎶 (b-a-ji-m /⁠bāji⁠/, tribute, toll); see there for more. Etymologically related to other Iranian borrowings: բաժանեմ (bažanem, to divide) and բաժակ (bažak, cup).
