A Middle Iranian borrowing: compare Parthian 𐫁𐫇𐫗 (bwn /⁠bun⁠/, “base, bottom, foundation, beginning; root, source, origin; principle, basis”), Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (bwn' /⁠bun⁠/, “base, foundation, bottom”); ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰudʰnás, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰudʰmḗn, whence Old Armenian ան-դունդ (an-dund).[1][2][3][4]
