From Classical Syriac ܓܘܒ (gubb), ܓܘܒܐ (gubbā, pit, hole, well, prison) of native Semitic origin. Compare Aramaic גב (gōb, pit, moat), Hebrew גב (gēb, water hole, pit), Arabic جب (jubb, cistern, well; pit, fosse) and Akkadian  (gubbu, reservoir, cistern).
